About Us

Soulcraft, Cleveland Inc. is about re-discovering the dynamic value of working with one’s hands and the creative community which naturally arises when a group of people engage in such a discovery.  It is a membership-based community woodworking workshop, woodworking education center and gallery for the work produced.   We provide a fully equipped workshop which can be accessed at a variety of levels, a full compliment of classes for the green beginner to the most experienced, and the space to display and sell the work produced.  We are an incubator of creativity, craftsmanship and community.

Our name comes from a book by Matthew Crawford, Shopclass as Soulcraft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work. Mr. Crawford quotes Alexander Kojeve:

The man who works recognizes his own product in the World that has actually been transformed by his work: he recognizes himself in it, he sees in it his own human reality, in it he discovers and reveals to others the objective reality of his humanity, of the originally abstract and purely subjective idea he has of himself.

The inherent value that comes from working with ones hands, of creating something, affects one’s psychic development far beyond the learning of a skill.  It changes one’s perspective on how they relate to the world around them.  Matthew’s book captured this sentiment so compellingly, we just had to “steal” the name…

We are located at 3619 Walton Ave. in the historic Hildebrandt Building.  Its a bustling place, brimming with talented Cleveland artists.  You really need to see the place…
